One day, a lion was sleeping peacefully in his den. A mouse came along and started to play on the lion’s body. The lion woke up and was very angry. He caught the mouse and said, “How dare you disturb my sleep? You are a tiny creature and I am the king of the jungle. I will kill you and eat you!”
The mouse was very scared and begged for mercy. He said, “Please spare my life, O mighty lion. I did not mean to offend you. I was just playing. You are so big and strong, and I am so small and weak. It would be no honor for you to kill me. Please let me go, and I promise I will repay your kindness someday.”
The lion laughed at the mouse’s words. He said, “You are so foolish. How can you ever repay me? You are nothing but a snack for me. But I am feeling generous today, so I will let you go. But don’t ever come near me again, or I will not spare you.” He then released the mouse and went back to sleep.
The mouse was very grateful and ran away. He said to himself, “I will never forget the lion’s kindness. He spared my life when he could have easily killed me. I hope I can do something for him someday.”
A few days later, the lion was roaming in the forest. He saw a herd of deer and decided to hunt one of them. He chased after a deer and was about to catch it, when he stepped into a hunter’s trap. A net fell over him and he got entangled in it. He roared and struggled, but he could not free himself. He realized that he was in great danger. He said, “Oh no, I am trapped. The hunter will come soon and kill me. Is this the end of my life?”
The mouse heard the lion’s roar and recognized his voice. He said, “That is the lion who spared my life. He is in trouble. I must help him.” He ran towards the sound and saw the lion trapped in the net. He said, “Don’t worry, O mighty lion. I am here to help you. You were kind to me, and now I will repay your kindness.”
The lion was surprised to see the mouse. He said, “You are the mouse who disturbed my sleep. How can you help me? You are too small and weak. You cannot do anything for me. Go away and save yourself.”
The mouse said, “No, O mighty lion. I will not leave you. You are my friend, and I will not abandon you. You may think I am small and weak, but I have sharp teeth. I can gnaw through the net and free you. Please trust me and be patient.”
The lion was doubtful, but he had no choice. He said, “All right, mouse. Do what you can. But hurry up, before the hunter comes.”
The mouse quickly started to gnaw at the net. He worked hard and fast, and soon he made a hole in the net. He said, “Come on, lion. Follow me. I have made a way for you to escape.”
The lion followed the mouse and got out of the net. He was free. He said, “Thank you, mouse. You have saved my life. You are a true friend. You have proved that you can repay my kindness. You have also proved that size does not matter. You are small, but you are brave and clever. You are a great mouse.”
